Today’s post includes excerpts from What’s the Story? Building Blocks for Fiction Writing, chapter two: “Plot.” It’s a book that lays out the fundamentals of creating fictional stories, equipping you with the basic skills necessary for writing stories that engage. Enjoy!
Try these plot ideas to get your brain a’storming. Some are realistic. Others are just ludicrous. Some have been done before. The point is for you to tell the story differently. Ask yourself why when reading these. A world wherein employees work nonstop with no vacation—a riot ensues. Super Deluxe is eccentric and bold. Super Deluxe is built on the premise of morality. It questions what is right and what’s wrong and in the process, makes us understand that what’s right for.What is a Plot?
A plot is a sequence of related events in a story.
Plot usually centers around the protagonist’s primary goal or challenge, the central story problem. Each event in the story pushes the protagonist toward a climax where they either succeed or fail to resolve the story problem. In a mystery, the challenge might be to solve a crime. In a romance, the goal is to find true love.
As the plot progresses, the stakes get higher and tensions rise. A killer is on the loose. If the detective doesn’t solve the crime fast, the killer will strike again. As the detective closes in, the killer taunts the detective and threatens his family. Then he kidnaps the detective’s daughter. The situation grows increasingly dire, desperate, or dangerous. The story intensifies at every turn.
The climax is the moment in the story where tension reaches its peak and the stakes are maxed out. The climax occurs near the end of the story and is followed by a resolution, which is when the central story problem (main plot) and all subplots are resolved. Getting to the climax isn’t easy for the characters; otherwise, there would be no story to tell. Therefore, the journey is hard on them, causing a lot of suffering. This results in a satisfying payoff at the story’s end.
In a tightly woven plot, all events are necessary and intertwined with the central conflict. Removing any scene or plot point would break the story. Readers lose interest when a story is filled with unnecessary excess: backstory that isn’t relevant to the plot, lengthy exposition about how a gadget works, and pages of description become tedious. Most readers don’t want to drift too far from the plot, get pulled out of the story, or be confused by tangents.
Readers keep turning pages for two reasons: they care about the characters, and they want to find out what happens. When a plot is well crafted, readers will stick around, because they want to see the detective catch the killer, or they want to see the protagonist find love.
Plot Types and Originality
It’s not uncommon for writers to develop a premise, concept, or entire plot only to realize that something similar has already been done. It’s tempting to throw the idea away and search for something more original. In some cases, that might be a smart move. But most of the time, throwing away an “unoriginal” idea is a mistake.
Plots are built around conflict, but there are only a few conflicts to choose from. There is some debate about how many conflicts exist. Some traditions argue for three; others identify four or more. Here’s a list of six:
*Man vs. man
*Man vs. nature
*Man vs. society
*Man vs. self
*Man vs. machine
*Man vs. supernatural
That’s it. The central conflict of every plot is based on one of these conflicts. Examine any story you can think of, and you’ll be able to classify it as one of these six conflicts.
Think of all the books you’ve read and movies you’ve watched. Can you think of any with a plot that doesn’t fit into one of these? Probably not, and that’s why trying to be original is a useless task.Tips for Devising a Compelling Plot
*Goals and motives. Build a plot around the protagonist’s goals. What does the hero want? What does the antagonist want? What do the other characters want? Why do the characters want these things? Goals and motives are the driving forces behind the characters’ actions and decisions.
*Stakes. Tensions rise and stakes get higher as the plot unfolds. What will the characters gain if they succeed? What will they lose if they fail?
*Momentum. Make sure every scene and chapter move the plot forward in a meaningful way. If a scene can be cut without changing the story, then that scene is unnecessary.
*Plot versus character. Avoid plots that overshadow the characters, and avoid characters who do little more than guide readers through the plot. A good balance of compelling characters and a gripping plot results in the best possible story.
*Originality. Don’t worry about being original. Focus on developing fresh ideas for your story. Use the other elements—characters, setting, and theme—to enrich your plot and make it feel innovative.
*Resolution. When you finish your draft, make a list of the subplots. Are all subplots and the central plot resolved in a satisfactory way? If you’re planning to write a sequel, did you close the main plot but leave a story thread open?
*Plotting and planning. Making a list of your plot points gives you a good overview of your story, which you can quickly review to check for flow, pacing, conflict, and tension.
*Page-turners. Not all stories are page-turners, but if your goal is to keep readers glued to the story, plan plot points that intrigue and entice them.

I was in college, second year BA English to be precise, when I was introduced to the concept of existentialism. The idea that god is dead (if at all you believed in such an entity) and that there is no pattern to our human lives which are but a series of random events. It’s a difficult idea to accept because so much of the world is designed and organised around the thought that our actions will find logical ends, like well-aimed arrows finding their targets. Religion and its godchild morality certainly say so. But if we are to zoom out, observe our little, insignificant lives from a distance, the way the camera often behaves (PS Vinod, Nirav Shah) in Super Deluxe, letting us watch the drama unfold as mere spectators, the many tasks that we do with so much emotion end up looking funny and foolish.A Plot Story Deluxe Movie
Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Super Deluxe is super fun. But it also goes beyond just giving us entertaining stories with a motley cast of characters. There’s Vembu (Samantha), quite literally a femme fatale, stuck in an extraordinary situation where she needs the help of her resentful husband Mugilan (Fahadh Faasil). There’s a group of teenagers who’re planning to bunk school and watch an adult film. There’s a family eagerly waiting for the arrival of the man of the house who’d abandoned them nearly eight years ago. Or at least, Thiagarajan Kumararaja does. The film is filled with little moments of unexpected comedy, deliberately orchestrated to make us question age old wisdom that we substitute for the truth. For instance, the idea that a chaste woman’s words will bear fruit. In the amoral landscape of Super Deluxe, it is those who are unafraid to confront the ugliness of what they’ve done, who are blessed with such powers. So, when a woman who has an extramarital fling says the electricity will be back before you know it, it does. The curses of those who consider themselves sinners come true. Or is that once again a mere string of coincidences where our human brain is desperately seeking patterns?
Do we need an all powerful god to find redemption? Or can the sound of the doorbell - ding dong - do the work of churchbells? Can you find ’real magic events’ in narrow, grungy gullies? Can we find our freedom in embracing the life instinct, the libido, through a B grade porn film?
Even if you’re not interested in looking closely at the philosophy anchoring Super Deluxe, it’s still wildly paisa vasool. And this is true of not only the major characters but also the minor ones. The principal who just says ’Go!’ for minutes together. Or the gossipy old neighbour who drops in to offer a commentary on the return of the prodigal man of the house. Or the Brahmin family which is worried if there’s any non-veg in the fridge of their hosts, not knowing what it actually has. Or the elaborate explanation that the character called ’Muttapupps’ offers to a nonchalant middle-aged woman at a DVD rental.
Among the different stories that make up Super Deluxe, Vijay Sethupathi’s performance as trans woman Shilpa is the most heartbreaking. Along with her son, the adorable Rasukutty (Ashwanth Ashokkumar), Shilpa must make an ordinary journey that becomes unnecessarily complicated because of the twisted belief systems around them. From Shilpa’s voice to her gait and the way she looks at herself appreciatively in the mirror, Vijay Sethupathi is all charm and grace. The Bagavathi Perumal and Vijay Sethupathi combination has always ensured laughs. But in Super Deluxe, where the director inverts the world to show it to us the right way up (and the shot before the interval is an affirmation of this), Bagavathi Perumal plays a sleazy, frightening cop. He won’t hurt a worm, but he will do worse. The scenes between him and Shilpa make the skin crawl, with both actors working together to build up the tension without skipping a beat.
Ramya Krishnan plays Leela, a struggling mother married to a man who’s discovered religion and is consumed by it. Discussing her character’s trajectory would prove to be a spoiler, but enough to say that towards the end, she passes a comment which is strangely true of how she’s approached her career. And why she still remains relevant in the film industry, refusing to be relegated to the mommy roles that many women actors her age have settled for.
Samantha and Fahadh don’t exactly blend into the lower middle class home where they are placed. But they pull off the millennial relationship convincingly. I caught myself giggling at the incredulous look that Mugilan shoots Vembu when she discloses the number of boyfriends she’s had. Their chemistry is somewhat uneven but I suspect that this has to do with the writing. Some scenes work really well while others look a tad forced. The scene when they are analysing their marriage in the car, for instance, is a brand of cutesy that doesn’t sit well in a film like this.
The intelligent screenplay and the slick editing ensure that we never get bored all through the near 3 hour film. The camera does exactly what is required of it, providing us perspective and not just mere showy visual with fancy angles. And how wonderful it is to sit through a Tamil film with so many silent frames, and where there is background music/noise only when it is absolutely necessary and adds to what we’re watching on screen. In fact, if you ignore it at some crucial junctures, you may even fail to make certain connections in the plot.
Super Deluxe, like Aaranya Kaandam, will open new doors of possibility for Tamil cinema. It may well be that the industry, which is already seeing quite a bit of successful experimentation, is stepping into the Deluxe age.

It’s always nice to see a machine avoid using generic card symbols just to fill space.

WHAT IS SLOTH?
Our dictionary defines sloth as “an aversion to work or exertion; laziness; indolence.” These words reasonably arouse the scorn of anyone committed to making a productive contribution to society. They may likewise excite our indignation when we observe a co-worker or family member failing to bear a reasonable share in a common enterprise. However, this definition does not penetrate the spiritual reality of the sin we call sloth.
THE SIN OF SLOTH
What distinguishes the sin of sloth from merely wasting time playing video games or watching the tenth rerun of a television series is the part sadness plays in it, and its rejection of God’s love. These distinguishing characteristics require some clarification, so let us turn, for a moment, to our Scripture, where the author of the Book of Ecclesiasticus urges us to

This means the lassitude of sloth is a two-fold sin. First, because it rejects a spiritual good – God’s love – and secondly because it encourages us to refrain from employing that good in our relations with God and one another. Our Catechism observes,
Faith in God’s love encompasses the call and the obligation to respond with sincere love to divine charity. The first commandment enjoins us to love God above everything and all creatures for him and because of him…One can sin against God’s love in various ways…acedia or spiritual sloth goes so far as to refuse the joy that comes from God and to be repelled by divine goodness. (CCC, No. 2093, 2094)
WHY EMBRACE SLOTH?
One might reasonably shirk some of the more onerous responsibilities of our Christian vocation, simply because, occasionally, at least, they seem so difficult and challenging. Doing nothing might seem a far more attractive option than practicing some of the works of mercy. However, why would anyone turn from God’s love and willingly embrace spiritual sadness in its place?
The Church’s classic theologians offer a number of answers. One is succumbing to simple physical strain. Psalm 90 (91) describes the happiness of the individual who trusts in God, and, as a result, has no fear of – among other ills – “the scourge that lays waste at noon.” Early religious writers interpreted this “scourge” as sloth, the ho-hum midday weariness that besets someone who has been fasting. Although this manifestation of sloth was historically identified most frequently among hermits, and others committed to the contemplative life, any of us may find our prayer life boring or unproductive, and this can lead to our grumbling “What’s the point?” If we allow the question to go unanswered – unchallenged – we may easily find ourselves turning aside from prayer and wallowing in a sea of self-pity.
Another cause of sloth is allowing ourselves to get so caught up with the demands of our everyday lives that we feel we “have no time” for the deep intimacy our faith tells us we must cultivate with God. This “busy-ness” may seem to contradict the notion of sloth as a form of lethargy, but if we allow our work or other responsibilities to impinge upon our spiritual life, we may find ourselves turning away from prayer, unhappily identifying it as simply one more tiring claim upon our already over-booked calendar.

Ora et labora, “prayer and work” are keystones of the monastic vocation, and the monastic schedule clearly sets aside time for each. If it is faithfully embraced – especially if it is embraced as a sign on earth of the life we may look forward to in heaven – the monastic vocation should put sloth to rout. We have seen that this is not the case, however. If those called to the exalted planes of religious life can fall prey to sloth, what benefit shall the average lay person derive from Climacus’ words?

THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
Our author suggests that seeking out the confessional is the frosting on the spiritual cake that delivers us from sloth. Sloth encourages us to do nothing, to care about nothing, to behave as if nothing matters but our own discontent. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an opportunity to address, and triumph over, each of those temptations. The reason for this is quite simple: the Sacrament of Reconciliation demands our active participation. To enjoy its benefits we must bestir ourselves, abandon our lethargy, and approach the confessional. Finally, we must be willing to embrace the challenge to change. Ronald Knox, a spiritual writer from the last century, composed a retreat in which he asked individuals to consider the calm, the quiet, and the serenity of the Virgin Mary. As we consider these qualities while meditating in church, they may seem very positive recommendations, but in these days of immediate, electronic gratification, quiet and calm people can often be mistaken for depressed, lazy lethargic – or slothful. So Knox helpfully points out the calm individual’s “knack of putting first thing first.” And here we might think of our Blessed Mother. After St. Luke describes Gabriel’s telling Mary she is to be the Mother of Our Savior, he describes Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, and tells us she paid her visit “in haste.” What is important here is Mary’s paying her visit “in haste,” but not “in a hurry.” Our dictionary defines “haste” as speed, but adds that it is speed combined with a certain purpose or dispatch. This echoes Knox’s observation, “Calm people don’t need to be in a hurry, because they hasten at the right moment, about the right things.”
THE CHALLENGE OF MARY’S “HASTE”
In the “Purgatory” of Dante’s Divine Comedy, the slothful souls repent of their sinful indifference by racing up the Mountain of Purgatory with “good will and right affection.” (“Purgatory,” XVIII, 96ff). Two souls in the lead cry out the passage from St. Luke, “Mary…went with haste into the hill country.” They accompany these words with the admonition, “Haste, haste, lest time be lost through little love.”
We make a mistake if we imagine the gospel is a record of things that happened to other people, somewhere else, a long time ago. In fact, the gospel is a story told about us, here and now. Each of the individuals we meet in the gospel accounts is a reflection of us, and each of them illustrates what we ought to be doing – or what we ought to avoid. Mary is the model for the Church, so she is our model in all things. She is the Church’s first tabernacle and its first evangelist, an individual willing to leave behind all the comfort and security of home to proclaim the Good News. And she is willing to do it “in haste.” Our Baptism calls us to do the same.

WHAT IS SLOTH?
Our dictionary defines sloth as “an aversion to work or exertion; laziness; indolence.” These words reasonably arouse the scorn of anyone committed to making a productive contribution to society. They may likewise excite our indignation when we observe a co-worker or family member failing to bear a reasonable share in a common enterprise. However, this definition does not penetrate the spiritual reality of the sin we call sloth.
THE SIN OF SLOTH
What distinguishes the sin of sloth from merely wasting time playing video games or watching the tenth rerun of a television series is the part sadness plays in it, and its rejection of God’s love. These distinguishing characteristics require some clarification, so let us turn, for a moment, to our Scripture, where the author of the Book of Ecclesiasticus urges us to
The noun Sloth, now means to be awesome. Sloth’s are mammals located in South America in the Peruvian areas. Sloths are really cool, they spend their days sleeping and then eat, they sometimes. In the Latin text, “fretting” is described as acedia, which means moroseness or sadness, even peevishness. None of these should be confused with the mere laziness of the dictionary definition – or with clinical depression, which, because it is a physical/ psychological illness, is not sinful. St. Thomas Aquinas refers to some unnamed sources “who say that sloth is a sluggishness of the mind which neglects to begin good.”(ST, II-II, 35, 1) He adds,
Since, then, spiritual good is a good in very truth, sorrow about spiritual good is evil in itself. And yet that sorrow also which is about a real evil, is evil in its effect, if it so oppresses a man as to draw him away entirely from good deeds.
A DOUBLE AILMENTSloth Definition In The Bible
This means the lassitude of sloth is a two-fold sin. First, because it rejects a spiritual good – God’s love – and secondly because it encourages us to refrain from employing that good in our relations with God and one another. Our Catechism observes,
Faith in God’s love encompasses the call and the obligation to respond with sincere love to divine charity. The first commandment enjoins us to love God above everything and all creatures for him and because of him…One can sin against God’s love in various ways…acedia or spiritual sloth goes so far as to refuse the joy that comes from God and to be repelled by divine goodness. (CCC, No. 2093, 2094)
WHY EMBRACE SLOTH?
One might reasonably shirk some of the more onerous responsibilities of our Christian vocation, simply because, occasionally, at least, they seem so difficult and challenging. Doing nothing might seem a far more attractive option than practicing some of the works of mercy. However, why would anyone turn from God’s love and willingly embrace spiritual sadness in its place?
The Church’s classic theologians offer a number of answers. One is succumbing to simple physical strain. Psalm 90 (91) describes the happiness of the individual who trusts in God, and, as a result, has no fear of – among other ills – “the scourge that lays waste at noon.” Early religious writers interpreted this “scourge” as sloth, the ho-hum midday weariness that besets someone who has been fasting. Although this manifestation of sloth was historically identified most frequently among hermits, and others committed to the contemplative life, any of us may find our prayer life boring or unproductive, and this can lead to our grumbling “What’s the point?” If we allow the question to go unanswered – unchallenged – we may easily find ourselves turning aside from prayer and wallowing in a sea of self-pity.
Another cause of sloth is allowing ourselves to get so caught up with the demands of our everyday lives that we feel we “have no time” for the deep intimacy our faith tells us we must cultivate with God. This “busy-ness” may seem to contradict the notion of sloth as a form of lethargy, but if we allow our work or other responsibilities to impinge upon our spiritual life, we may find ourselves turning away from prayer, unhappily identifying it as simply one more tiring claim upon our already over-booked calendar.
THE REMEDIES: REMEMBER THE SABBATH
Sloth triumphs when we remove or omit God from our moral landscape. The Third Commandment tells us Snook size florida.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath day to the Lord, your God; in it you shall not do any work….

In 1991, a mother told the Department of Children and Families that Buongirno had sexually abused her nine-year-old son in 1990 at St. Matthias Church in East Lyme. The charges were dropped when the boy denied the abuse. In 1994, a man came forward to the diocese claiming that Buongirno had molested him in his teen years during the 1970s, at St. Thomas More High School in Colchester, where Buongirno taught before he entered the seminary. When Buongirno admitted that the charges were true, Bishop Reilly sent him to the Institute of Living for five months. In 2002, a man filed a lawsuit charging that beginning in 1977, when he was a 14-year-old parishioner at St. Mark the Evangelist in Westbrook, Primavera had repeatedly abused him “by ‘kissing him on the lips’ and ‘touching and fondling’ his genitalia, among other sexual actions. The assaults often occurred at the church, the suit claims.” In 1979, Primavera was transferred to St. Mary Star of the Sea in New London, where he allegedly molested another 14-year-old altar boy. Primavera was returned to his Toronto diocese and eventually sent to New Mexico, where he taught at a military high school. In 1991, a mother told the Department of Children and Families that Buongirno had sexually abused her nine-year-old son in 1990 at St. Matthias Church in East Lyme. The charges were dropped when the boy denied the abuse. In 1994, a man came forward to the diocese claiming that Buongirno had molested him in his teen years during the 1970s, at St. Thomas More High School in Colchester, where Buongirno taught before he entered the seminary. When Buongirno admitted that the charges were true, Bishop Reilly sent him to the Institute of Living for five months.
